1 ведущий:

Welcome! We are glad to see you in our meeting. Our conference is devoted to the British holidays and traditions. The aim of our conference is to get acquainted with the national British customs. We are going to tell you about New Year’s Day, Robert Burns’ Night, Mother’s Day, Easter, May Festival, Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night and Christmas. Let’s go on the journey!

2 ведущий:

First of all, we’d like to introduce our little helpers. They are the students of the 2nd form. They will show you the pictures with British holidays on them. These pictures were made by themselves. We hope you will like them. (The 2nd formers come in, name their favourite holidays and show the pictures of them) <Рисунок 1, Рисунок 2, Рисунок 3, Рисунок 4, Рисунок 5 >

New Year

3 ведущий:

Thus, we begin with New Year’s Day <Рисунок 6>. New Year is not as important in England as Christmas. Some people don’t celebrate it at all. Many people have New Year’s Parties. The party usually begins at 8 o’clock and goes on until early in the morning. At midnight they listen to the chimes of Big Ben, drink a toast to the New Year and sing Auld Lang Syne.

1 ведущий: The year of 2008 is announced as the year of the Mouse. And we’ve got a scene for you. (It will be shown by the 5th-formers in the costumes.) Meet them applauding! (The 5th formers appear. The scene is about Town Mouse and Country Mouse from the textbook «Spotlight») <Рисунок 7>

2 ведущий: The next holiday is Robert Burn’s Night. <Рисунок 8> January 25th is the birthday of Scotland’s greatest poet Robert Burns. There are hundreds of Burns clubs not only in Britain but also throughout the world, and on the 25th of January they all open Burns Night celebrations. In banquet halls of Glasgow, in cottages of Scottish villages, thousands of people drink a toast to the immortal memory of Robert Burns. To the sounds of bagpipes there appear traditional dishes on the festival tables. The dinner is followed by dancing, pipe music, and reciting poems from Burns’ lyrics. The celebration concludes with singing the poet’s famous Auld Lang Syne. And you’ll listen to it.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine
But seas between us briad hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne

  1. ведущий: Next comes St.Valentine’s Day. < Рисунок 9> The guests from the other school will show us a performance named under the key words of the holiday “Be My Valentine!”

2 ведущий: Mother’s Day. The mother is the closest and dearest person for every child.

During the Middle Ages the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parents and their mothers on Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother’s Day.

  1. ведущий: Easter is a Christmas holiday in March or April, when Christians remember

the death of Jesus Christ and his return to life. The holiday is marked by going to church and then having a celebration dinner. The most popular Easter emblem is the Easter egg: a hard-boiled egg painted in different colours. Easter eggs are traditional Easter present for children. Nowadays Easter eggs are usually made of chocolate. <Рисунок 10>

  1. ведущий: The May Spring Festival is celebrated on the 1st of May. It is celebrated with garlands of flower, dancing and games on the village green, where they erect a maypole – a tall pole decorated with flowers and ribbons. The girls put on their best summer dresses, put flowers in their heads and wait for crowning of the May Queen.

  1. ведущий: Halloween.

Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October. On that day children put on the costumes they’ve made. The most popular costumes are witches and ghosts. Then children go from house to house and sing “Trick or treat” and people give them candies. One of the most important symbol of the day is a pumpkin with a candle inside. People also decorate their houses in traditional Halloween colours: orange and black. <Рисунок 11>

2 ведущий: Have you ever heard of Guy Fawkes Night? No? Then listen to our quests!

<Приложение 1>

1 ведущий: Christmas is the main public holiday in Britain, when people spend time at home with their families, eat special food and drink a lot. Christmas is a Christian festival when to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. <Рисунок 12>

  1. ведущий: There are many Christmas carols. But the most popular are “We wish you a merry Christmas” and “Jingle Bells”. And they will be sung by all of you.

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow
On a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight, O
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh (repeat)

Jingle all the way!
Oh, What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year.
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year.

  1. ведущий: Our conference has come to an end. We hope it was interesting for you. You may write an essay in English and read it for your classmates. And now you are invited to the dining room to have a holiday dinner.
