The First reference to the Seven Wonders is
found in the History of Herodotus as long ago
as the 5th century B.C.
The final list of the Seven Wonders was completed
during the Middle Ages. The list comprised the seven
most impressive monuments of the Ancient World,
some of which barely survived to the Middle Ages.
Слайд 3
Six of the seven wonders have
not survived to the present day
having been destroyed by
natural disaster or by humans.

The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of
Rhodes, a tall bronze
statue of Helios, the
Greek god of the sun,
was erected in about
280 B.C. to guard the
entrance to the harbor
of the Mediterranean
island of Rhodes in
Greece.
The Colossus of
Rhodes was not only
a gigantic statue. It
was rather a symbol
of unity of the
people who
inhabited that
beautiful
Mediterranean

The statue was
30m tall and
stood upon a
17m pedestal.
For years the
statue stood at
the harbor
entrance, until a
strong
earthquake hit
Rhodes about
226 B.C. The city
was badly
damaged and
the Colossus
was broken.
“ But even lying on the ground, it was
a marvel”,
said Pliny the Elder.

Alexandria (Egypt), city and major
seaport in northern Egypt, in the Nile
River delta, on a ridge that separates
Lake Mareotis from the Mediterranean
Sea. The city was founded in 332 BC by
Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia,
who planned it as one of the finest ports
of the ancient world.
Слайд 9
The Lighthouse at Alexandria
Of the Seven Wonders of
the Ancient World, only
one had a practical use in
addition to its
architectural elegance:
The Lighthouse of
Alexandria.
For sailors it ensured a
safe return to the Great
harbor. For architects, it
meant even more; it was
the tallest building on
Earth. It was 122m high.
Light was produced with a
fire and reflectors, and
could be seen from a
distance of 42 miles.
Слайд 10
The Lighthouse of
Alexandria was
located on the
ancient island
Pharos, now a
promontory within
the Egyptian city of
Alexandria.
Of the six vanished
Wonders, the
Lighthouse was the
last to disappear (in
1480 A.D. it was
destroyed by
Mamelouk Sultan
Quaitbay).

The great pyramid of Cheops
The pyramids at Giza in Egypt, are among the most famous
pieces of architecture in the world. This pyramid was built
without the use of cranes, pulleys, or lifting tackle.
Archaeologists are still not certain how this was accomplished.
Слайд 12
The Pyramids of
Egypt built at Giza
during the 4th
Dynasty (2680-2544
B.C.) are the oldest of
the seven wonders
and the only ones
remaining intact
today.
The pyramids at Giza
in Egypt, are among
the most famous
pieces of architecture
in the world. This
pyramid was built
without the use of
cranes, pulleys, or
lifting tackle.
Archaeologists are still
not certain how this
Слайд 13
It ranked as the
tallest structure
on the Earth for
more than 43
centuries. Each
side is carefully
oriented with one
of the cardinal
points of the
compass, that is,
north, south, east
and west.
It would have
taken over
2,300,000 blocks
of stone of 2.5
tons each. The
total weight would
have been
6,000,000 tons.

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, a 45m high white
marble structure, was built in 353 B.C. ( now a site in
Turkey) in memory of King Mausolus of Caria.
The beauty of the Mausoleum is not only in the
structure, but in decorations and statues .
Слайд 15
Some of the
sculptures survived
and today they are on
display at the British
Museum in London.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Statue of Zeus sculpted by
the Greek Phidias about 430
B.C., won fame because of its
beauty.
Слайд 19
The figure of the seated
Zeus was 9m tall and
rested on a base that
was 3m high. The
statue of the Greek god
was made of wood and
covered with gold and
ivory. Golden lions
rested near his feet. In
its right hand the
statue held the figure
of Nike( the goddess of
victory) and in its left
was a scepter with an
eagle on the top. The
throne was made of
gold.

The Temple of Artemis (Diana) at Ephesus
The Ephesus Goddess Artemis, sometimes called Diana,
is not the same figure as Artemis in Greece. The Greek
Artemis is the goddess of hunt, the Ephesus Artemis
was a goddess of fertility.
The first temple was built around 800 B.C. It was
destroyed and rebuilt several times.
On the night of 21 July 356 B.C. Herostratus burned
the temple in an attempt to have his name go down in
history.
Слайд 21
The new temple
was 130m long
and 80m wide
with 127 marble
columns, each
20m tall. The
temple also
housed many
works of art.
The temple soon attracted many
worshippers and pilgrims,
strengthening the cult of Artemis.
Слайд 22
It was
destroyed
during a raid
by the Goths
in 262 A.D.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
According to accounts, the gardens were built to cheer
up Nebuchadnezzar's homesick wife, Amytis.
The king decided to recreate her homeland Media by
building an artificial mountain with rooftop gardens.
Слайд 24
Technically, the
gardens did not
hang, but grew on
the roofs and
terraces of the
royal palace in
Babylon.
Слайд 25
Today we can
see only these
remains.
