Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus:

Topic: “Food and health”

Skills: reading, speaking

Students: 10th form students of secondary school


1. Students will practice “Food” vocabulary.

2. Students will appreciate everyday colour-food rules for healthy life.

3. Students will use knowledge of “Food and health” for speaking.


  • Student’s book “Spotlight 10”/ Verginia Evans, Jenny Dooley, Bob Obee, Olga Afanasyeva, Irina Mikheeva. - M.: Express Publishing, 2012;

  • Laptop;

  • Projector;

  • Power Point presentation.

Types of interaction: individual work, whole-class activity, group work, work in pairs.

Teacher: Good morning! I’m glad to see you. Sit down, please. Let’s start out lesson.

Who is on duty today?

  • What date is it today?

  • What day of the week is it now?

  • What season is it?

  • What’s the weather like today?

2.Lead - in

aim: to warm up background knowledge.

Teacher: Look at the screen. Read the English proverb and tell me how you understand it.

Do you know any more English proverbs connected with food?

Students recall proverbs.

aim: to motivate on the topic

Teacher: Now look at the blackboard. You can see the words of wisdom “Tell me what you eat and I’ll tell what you are”. Read and explain them.

Students read the words of wisdom and discuss healthy eating habbits. They agree or disagree with the quotation and justify their opinion.

Teacher: Tell me, please what is the topic of our lesson.Yes, you are right. The topic of our lesson is “Food and health”.

Students try to formulate objectives of the lesson.

aim: to activate vocabulary

Teacher: Look at the screen. Which of the pictured items are fruits? vegetables? (ex. 1a p.102.)

Students answer using the picture.

Teacher: Now choose one card of a colour that you want (yellow, green, orange, red, blue, purple) and write down as many fruits and vegetables of this colour on your card.

Students take the cards and write down words on them.

Teacher: Unite into groups according to the colours (yellow, green, orange, red, blue, purple) and check yourselves. Then we will do it in class.

Teacher: Do ex. 2,3 p.102.

aim: to skim the text for the key words and main ideas

aim: to scan the text for the specific information

aim: to scan the text for the specific information

Teacher: How do you think colour is related to food? To find out read the text on page 103. I will give you 5 minutes to skim the text and answer my question.

Students read the text and answer teacher’s question after that.

Teacher: Do ex.4b p.102. Compare with your partner.

Teacher: Be ready to answer the questions.

Teacher: Fill in the table using the text and ex. 1a p.102. Be ready to answer my questions.
