Good morning (afternoon), dear visitors of Kazan! My name is …, and today I’ll be your guide. Now we are going to make a walking-tour to one of the central streets of the Kazan city – Ostrovsky Street.
W e are standing at the beginning of Ostrovsky Street, and the cross street here is Mussa Jalil Street. Firstly Ostrovsky Street was called Voznesenskaja Street. In 1924 Town Council of Kazan came to a determination to rename it in honour of the Russian playwright – Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky. This street appeared in the 16th century, when the city was densely populated. This street started with Petropavlovskaja Street and went deep into Sukonnaja Sloboda. It got the name Voznesenskaja after the Ascension of the Church, which was founded in 1676. In the place of today’s house number 9 was its bell tower.
N ow you can see Kazan State Young People’s Theatre. Its address is number 10 Ostovsky Street. This theatre is situated in the building of the Merchants’ Assembly, which was founded at the end of the 19th century. After October Revolution the House of Tatar Culture was opened here. After the fire in 1995 the Theatre was closed for reconstruction. On the 1st of March 2001 after the reconstruction the theatre opened again. The first play here took place on the 30th of November 1932. This very day is considered to be the Birthday of Young People’s Theatre. It was among the best children’s theatres in Russia. It repeatedly took part in different festivals, it was notable for prizes and diplomas. In 1996 the play “Storm” by William Shakespeare was honoured with the highest theatrical prize – “Golden Mask” in the nomination “The Best Play of the Year”.
L et’s go further. Now you can see the building of Klyachkin’s clinic – number 11/6 Ostrovsky Street. In the middle of the 19th century house and grounds belonged to Kazan merchant – V.I. Romanov, who built here one-storeyed shops in 1853. In 70’s the next owner – I.N. Juravlev – rebuilt it – he added the second floor. And the merchant’s heirs sold this plot to the city’s society. At the beginning of the 20th century after the major repairs the Klyachkin’s clinic was situated here. On the 26th of February 1913 G.Tukaj b ecame the patient of this clinic, even here he continued to write his poems. Unfortunately, soon after that on the 1st (15th) of April the famous Tatar poet – Gabdulla Tukay – died.
F urther, there is number 15 Ostrovsky Street, it’s a museum-flat (memorial flat) of Sharif Kamal. It was founded in 1944 in the merchant’s mansion, where an outstanding Tatar writer had lived since 1828. The décor was recreated and the writer’s personal things, his archives were presented.
Going further along the street, you can see the Health Centre, where one can enjoy fitness, visit baths, sauna and beauty shops.
I f we cross Tatarstan Street, we’ll find ourselves in the Millennium Park. T his park was founded in 2005 in honour of a thousand years of the city. In the very centre of it you see the boiling copper “Kazan”. The history of this monument is connected with the legend. Do you know it? When it was decided to found a city here, the city must have appeared in the place, where the copper boiled. In the park you can have a rest, all in all, it’s a very lovely and romantic place.
Let’s go further. There is the Basket-Hall in front of us – it’s the biggest sports centre in Russia. Its architect is Prokofjev. The Basket-Hall represents the centre, including 2 buildings – the main building and the building for a training hall. The main hall seats 7500 spectators, the small hall – 1500 spectators. Many competitions of the Universiade 2013 took place here.
A nd now we invite you to visit the Restaurant Centre “Tugan Avylym”. Here you can see the real Tatar countryside, lawns, flower beds, foot-bridges and taste the Tatar dishes. Also you can play billiards, bowling and go to the casino.
Here I say goodbye to you! See you soon!
