What do people do on Shove
Tuesday?
Another name for Shrove Tuesday is Pancake Day. Long ago this was a
day for feasting and having a good time.
People went to church to confess the bad things they had done and
would be 'shriven' or forgiven before the start of Lent.
Many people make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and in some parts of
the UK run in pancake races.
This custom grew up because of a legend dating from 1445.
On Shrove Tuesday one woman was still making pancakes as the
church bells rang. Rather than be late she took her frying pan and
pancake with her.

As the day before Lent, Shrove Tuesday is the perfect time to get rid of any
last minute indulgences – and use up any fatty foods.
On this day, people stuff themselves with fatty foods before the abstinence
of Lent kicks in.
In the past, families would be encouraged to clear out their cupboards to
remove the fattening foods from their houses.
They needed to come up with an easy way of get rid of temptation by
throwing away their indulgent ingredients, so threw them into one simple
meal.
The tradition of eating pancakes, believed to originate from pagan ritual,
allows families to use up all their eggs, butter, milk and flour all in one dish.
Some people believe that pancakes represent the four pillars of the Christian
faith: eggs for creation, flour for sustenance, salt for wholesomeness and
milk for purity.

Use a plate to trace a circle shape onto two layers of brown or yellow fabric.
For American-style pancakes, use a small saucer; for English crepe-style
pancakes, use a side plate.
Draw a second circle about 1.5cm (5/8 inch) around the outside of the traced
circle, and cut around this outer circle, preferably with pinking shears.
Use running stitch to stitch the two circles together, following the inner
traced line, and leaving a gap of about 7cm (3 inches) through which to add
a thin layer of small dried beans or rice.
Finally, stitch up the gap.

Method for making the batter
• Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held
high above the bowl so the flour gets a airing.
• Make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it.
• Whisk the eggs making sure any bits of flour from around the
edge of the bowl are mixed in with the egg.
• Gradually add small quantities of the milk, still whisking
• Continue whisking until the batter is smooth, with the
consistency of thin cream.
• Melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a non-stick frying pan.
• Spoon 2 tbsp of the melted butter into the batter and whisk it in.
• Let the pancake mix stand for at least 30 minutes before
cooking.
• Pour any left over butter into a dish. This will be used later to
grease the frying pan after each pancake has been made.
• Make sure the non-stick frying pan is really hot before adding
about 2 tbsp of the batter mixture.
• As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip the pan around from
side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter.
• Carefully lift the edge of the cooked pancake with a palette knife
to see if it's tinged gold as it should be.
• Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife to cook
the other side
• Slide it out of the pan onto a plate.
