  1. Now you will read the boy’s story about a sleepover in the British museum. Work in groups and choose the necessary information.

YAC member James won a competition to spend the night in the British Museum. Here's what he has to say about the experience.

Dear YAC,

My name is James, I am 12 years old and I live in Hertfordshire. I won the competition for the sleep over at the British Museum. I had an excellent time and I wanted to tell you a little bit about it and about myself.

I have been interested in archaeology for a long time.

I then began to find out much more about Egyptology and from then on I wanted to become an Egyptologist. After a while I thought to myself, instead of becoming an Egyptologist why don't I become an archaeologist, because if I become an Egyptologist there is not going to be digs or anything similar to that. But if I'm an archaeologist there is more of a chance of going on digs.

My parents signed me up to be a member of The Young Archaeologists' Club,. So far I have been a member of YAC for one year! I belong to the Cambridge YAC where I have a session every month.

I won the YAC competition for the sleepover at the British Museum, which I enjoyed a lot. I went with my parents and sister Heidi. You may think it would be quite creepy, but it wasn't to be honest. Even after going to bed at 12:00am, a few people stayed awake until about 1:00am partly because somebody was snoring and the noise echoed around the whole gallery!

The first activity I did was Pharaohs Quest Quiz; my group went into a room where we watched a slide show about things in Egypt. Then we were each given a quiz sheet with questions on it. Then we went to the story telling and the man who told the stories was really funny and the stories he told were really good about people in Egypt and what happened.

The next activity I did was Canopic jar headdress making which was in the Great Court and I made one that was a falcon's head. I had just enough time to finish mine before we moved on to mummy making, but we did not actually make a mummy, we wrote in Hieroglyphs of our names and stuck them on a cardboard coffin of the mummy. I also painted the mummy's coffin with a great mummies face on the bottom of the coffin.

After that, it was time for bed and so we got in our sleeping bags and after about an hour I went to sleep. I woke up the next day and we went down to breakfast and then on to our last activity, which was a gallery talk in the room where the mummies and coffins were. Our guide told us all about the mummies and how the Egyptians preserved their dead.

It was now time to go home so we packed up our things and everyone went to see the prize giving. Then we had a last look around the museum before starting our journey home. It was a great event, which we all enjoyed.
