Let’s compare these pictures and sentences: He has already painted the picture. Он уже написал эту картину. He painted the picture many years ago. Он написал эту картину много лет назад.

Function: When do we use them? Present Perfect The tense always has a link to the present. Past Simple The tense doesn’t have a link to the present. A state that started in the past and continues to now. I’ve known Mr. Green for three years. For finished actions/events in the past; or a sequence of events. I knew Mr. Green. Recently finished actions/those with a present result. You’ve bought a new bike! For actions which happened at an unspecified time. I’ve travelled a lot. With time markers like already, ever, never, just, lately, yet, this morning. With time markers like yesterday, two days ago, last year, in 2015.

Form: How do we make these structures? Present Perfect Past Simple Subject + have/has + past participle (.) James has eaten apples this morning. Subject + verb in the past simple (.) James ate apples yesterday. Subject + have/has + not + past participle (.) James hasn’t eaten apples this morning. Subject + did + not + verb bare infinitive (.) James didn’t eat apples yesterday. (Question word) + have/has + subject + past participle (?) Has James eaten apples this morning? (Question word) + did + subject + verb bare infinitive (?) Did James eat apples yesterday? Don’t use “did” in negatives and questions with was/were.
